Pamban Island lies in the westmost region of Rameswaram and is the largest island in Tamil Nadu. It is located between the Indian peninsula and Sri Lanka and is connected to the mainland via the Pamban bridge.

The Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge connects the National Highway (NH 49) with Rameswaram on the Pamban Island. This spectacular road bridge surrounded by the calm sea runs parallel to the Pamban rail bridge. It was inaugurated by the former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1988.
